OVERVIEW
The Marangu Route, nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route" due to historical soft drink availability at huts, is Kilimanjaro's only route offering dormitory-style hut accommodation rather than camping. This provides shelter from elements, slightly more comfort, and social atmosphere as multiple groups share facilities. The 6-day itinerary (versus 5-day express option) includes critical acclimatisation day at Horombo Huts, significantly improving summit success rates.
Marangu is often described as Kilimanjaro's "easiest" route, but this reputation is misleading—summit success rates are actually lower than Machame or Lemosho due to rapid ascent profile. The 6-day variant addresses this by incorporating rest/acclimatisation day. Physical difficulty is moderate with gradual inclines and shorter daily distances, but altitude challenges remain significant.
The route ascends and descends via same path, offering different perspectives on familiar terrain. Scenery is less dramatic than western routes but includes beautiful rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert zones.

DETAILED ITINERARY
Registration and equipment check at gate, 4-hour rainforest trek with colobus monkey sightings possible, overnight in dormitory huts (bunks with mattresses).
6-hour trek through moorland with giant heather and groundsel, first views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, overnight at Horombo Huts.
Optional day hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020m) and return, or rest day, critical for altitude adjustment, overnight at Horombo Huts (second night).
6-hour trek across "saddle" between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks through alpine desert, afternoon arrival for rest and early sleep before midnight summit attempt, overnight at Kibo Huts.
Midnight departure for summit push, 6–7 hours to Uhuru Peak via Gilman's Point (5,681m), sunrise at summit, 3-hour descent to Kibo Huts for breakfast, continue to Horombo Huts for overnight (total 12–14 hour day).
5-hour descent through moorland and rainforest, certificate ceremony at gate, transfer to Arusha hotel.
ACCOMODATION
Accommodation Options:
Mountain accommodation: Dormitory-style huts with bunk beds, mattresses, and pillows provided. Shared dining halls with tables and benches. Shared toilet facilities (long-drop style). Sleeping bags required (available for hire). No electricity or running water at huts. Huts accommodate 60+ climbers during peak season—expect social atmosphere and some noise.
Arusha accommodation (pre/post-climb): Standard mid-range hotel included (e.g., Arusha Tourist Inn, Venice Hotel). Upgrade to luxury hotel available (e.g., Rivertrees Country Inn) for USD 100–150 supplement.
Transport & Guiding:
Experienced lead mountain guide certified in altitude sickness recognition and wilderness first aid, plus assistant guide for groups of 6+. Guide-to-climber ratio: 1:4 maximum. Porter team carries equipment and personal duffel bags (15kg maximum per climber). All porters paid according to KPAP standards with proper equipment and meals
